More than 1 million people have been affected by worsening floods in India’s north-eastern state of Assam, officials said 25 September. The total figure consisted of those who had been displaced, stranded in or on their homes, or who had suffered damage to their crops, land or livelihoods, Vinod Kumar Pipersenia, the state’s principal secretary, said. Eleven people have died in incidents of drowning in the state over the past week, in the second wave of floods to hit the region since July, as rivers swelled and breached embankments. More than 200,000 people were staying in around 170 relief camps, Pipersenia said. EPA/STR
