An end of a relationship is always painful irrespective of the fact that whether it was your decision to call it quits or it was the other person who decided to move on. No matter how old we are, a break-up hurts as much as it did the first time; probably the only thing that changes is that we get better at coping with a heart break.

If you type “dealing with a break up” on your search engine, it will throw up 49,300,000 results in less than 30 seconds. We are desperate to find a way to mend our broken hearts. We might binge on chocolates, get drunk every night and spend a bizarre amount of money on shopping but does that dull the pain? Momentarily, may be, but at the end of the day when you curl up in bed alone, do the tears still trickle down?

Someone had once told me that when you really love someone, you never really get over the person, what happens is after a while you get used to their absence. Post break-up you think about the person all the time, a week later you probably think about the person every half hour and a month down the line, may be once a day. Whatever the mourning period, here are some tried and tested ways that can have a positive impact on you post break-up.

The most important thing to do is stop holding on to the past when you have decided to move on. The more you hold on to old photos, letters, cards, gifts and messages that remind you of how good your relationship was, the more you are going to yearn for it. Get rid of all the mush and learn to let go.

They say the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else. While a rebound relationship may not be the best idea, you should definitely spend time with people who make you feel good. No matter how rational a split, it always leaves you with moments of self-doubt and uncertainty and good company always helps you ride through this phase.  A lot of us like alone time when going through a low phase, while alone time is good to retrospect and introspect, pampering and flattery also go a long way in dulling the worst heartache.

A friend of mine said the only way to get over someone is to indulge in self love. The most important post break-up rule is not to lose a grip on yourself. I know that it is easier said than done but it is important to focus on what makes us feel and look good. Nothing boosts your ego more than genuine compliments. Join the gym, enroll in a dance class, dress to kill and overcome one of the lowest phases of your life in style.
