1. James Cameron, the film director, plans to get into a capsule and plummet, alone, down nearly seven miles to the planet’s most inaccessible spot: the Challenger Deep in the western Pacific

On Wednesday, James Cameron folded his 6-foot-2-inch frame into a 43-inch-wide capsule and plummeted, alone, down five miles in the New Britain Trench off Papua New Guinea. His feat, in a 24-foot-long craft dubbed the Deepsea Challenger, broke by a mile the world depth record for modern vehicles that a Japanese submersible had held.

The iconic suburban Chicago home that played a pivotal role in the 1990 John Hughes blockbuster “Home Alone” has sold after nearly a year on the market. The Chicago Tribune reports that the 4,250-square-foot, three-story Winnetka, Ill., home sold for $1.585 million — a relative bargain when compared to its original listing price of $2.4 million — on Thursday. The house was most recently listed for $1.95 million.

6. Stranded kite surfer fends off sharks with a knife for 2 days in Red Sea

A kite surfer who became stranded during an attempt to cross the Red Sea fought off sharks and endured excruciating thirst, according to Reuters and Polish media. Janek Lisewski, 42, a kite surfing champion from Poland, was two-thirds of the way through a 124-mile trip between Egypt and Saudi Arabia when the wind died down and deflated his kite. He survived by drinking energy drinks and two energy bars. He used a knife to fend off sharks.

A California middle school teacher has been placed on leave after administrators learned from students that the educator appears in porn videos available online. Stacie Halas, a 31-year-old science teacher at Richard B. Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard, was removed from the classroom Monday, three days after pupils reported spotting her in a series of X-rated clips.
