In Holland one way they celebrate the New Year is to shoot footballs (Traditionally the lids of the churns) out of milk churns using acetylene gas. This is commonly done by having the acetylene form in the barrel itself, by putting in a little bit of water and calcium carbide (hence “Carbide Shooting”, carbidschieten).
